Topic: tech tips and utilities

some new websites

I put a website at dothings.org last night, I have the first couple days of posts in queue. We’re going to low-tech, simple, and fun.

I’m also going to put up an affiliate site at golden4cash.info, it’s kind of an experiment with cookie stuffing, ppc advertising, and if redirects. If you want to help me pay my bills, you could go click on it and fill out some fake information on the front page and hit submit. You will make me $14.25, and if you use fake info, you won’t get bombarded by ads!

We’re working on installing Kaseya at work, it’s a purty sick managed services client, to hell with n-able. Timothy and I found a designer, Elizabeth, to work with us over at purebulk.com. I’m proud to say that I built the server that is running all of our sites(not this one, this one is a dreamhost site) they actually have decent hosting. I’d like to move ALL of my websites over to my server one day, but I don’t have the tools built yet to be able to effectively manage them. I’m not so good with apache yet, and im doing it all by hand. There are lots of good software pieces I can use, like cpanel11, i’d love…but they’re too expensive. By the way, if you go sign up for a host at that dreamhost link, you will earn me $97 dollars.

Bill and I were sipping the robotussin all day at work. Bill is our PHP programmer. Penny gave us looks a couple of times, but nobody else noticed :P He found these bottles for sale at biglots that are like totally pure unbuffered dextromorphan…with no acetominaphine.

I’m driving down to denver either tonight or tomorrow morning. It’s a long drive, I’ll get to be by my self. I haven’t seen Scott or Marta in such a long time, I don’t even remember when, at least a year I suppose. Miguel came up to visit me this year, we had some good times, and we didn’t do anything expansively dangerous either.

I get to talk to Scott still too, I like Scott. Scott is a lot of things, and liked by Jared does in fact happen to be one of them. You hear that Scott? I like you! Yeah. So there! :P Anyway dood, we need to play some serious magic when I come visit, mmmm’kay? Like for reals…

Yes, I’ll go see Marta, and Scott, and Miguel for the first few days…and then around Monday I’m going to head up to eagle to see my family. What do I do for the long drives? Well…It depends…but I like to keep the temperature fluxing…I put down the windows for 30-40 minutes and freeze out, and then while they’re still down I crank the heat …and then the windows go up slowly…a bit more and the heat starts to go down..then maybe the airflow comes on, but outside cold air…then it goes off for a bit(its kinda noisy)…then maybe it gets hot, and i put the windows down. Good we’ve made it 67 miles! Just 893 left. Maybe we’ll listen to some chili peppers, or jim morrison. I can really let my voice out when I’m along on the highway, singing into the wind. It’s not as pretty as Marta’s, and not as fine as Scott’s, but it’s mine and i like it to keep me company.

Maybe I’ll scream in the wind for a few miles…then hold my hand out the window if it’s rainy or cold and see how long it can stay.

If I was clever I brought some goods with me, bouza or kimchi are good car riders for the first 65% of the trip. After that it’s red bull, chocolate, and (shhh, don’t tell my mother) sometimes some tobacco. When you’ve still got 300 miles left, and it’s like 1am, tobacco is wonderful on the highway. I’m kind of defensive about that I think, my father smokes…he’s done it on or off for a long time. I like the rich dark tobacco you get at the pipe shop, the stuff that emanates like old wood. Cigarettes really are gross.

There is something transcendent about highways, maybe the same thing happens with walking…? You’re just right there, nothing to worry about behind you, and nothing to fret over in front of you..just keep rolling down the highway…slip slidin away, eh Jesse?

My attention span is slipping now, is 422, i can haz stimulashunz? ttfn

Five ESSENTIAL Tools for a Network Support Technician

We’re upgrading a lot of our ‘desktop support’ tools at work this month, here are some neat things I’m starting to use.

LogMeInRescue - A very fast and reliable ‘instant on’ remote connection. You give the client a web address “www.logmein123.com” and a 6-digit pin code and they’re in your loving hands in about 60 seconds, IE, firefox and vista compatible. A bit pricey at $120+ dollars a month for a single user, yet if you do serious remote troubleshooting, there is no other software out there that can compare. This is fast, painless, and very professional.

N-Able Momentum - This is a highly customizable external service-monitoring service :P We hook all of our DNS and SENDMAIL servers up so that if any go down we get emails and/or SMS texts depending on the priority of the machine. It also provides SNMP and WMI information across local area networks. Great for our larger business clientele, especially medical offices that have 50 or 60 computers and a couple of servers. Not only do we get realtime usage / troubleshooting information on the entire remote network, but any computer inside of the network is instantly accessible via a VERY strong ‘instant on’ connection dubbed Remote Support Manager.

Acronis True Image - I use this to make backup images of people’s partitions. My own workstation, some of the programmers’ workstations…and clients that routinely destroy their operating systems, I’ve found it’s easier just to assume the worst and be prepared! Even saving yourself from a single workstation reinstall can more then pay for itself. I highly recommend this software, I don’t even know 3/4 of what all it can do, but even the most simple basic operations are lifesavers!

XXcopy - For making uber fast file-level system wide backups, nothing beats xxcopy. Just plug a drive in, launch the ‘full command’ –> xxcopy <src> <dest> /e /c /v /h /k /r <– and it will happily plug away, unattended until all the copy-able files have been copied. There are some other really nice switches too, works alright over the network as well.

Roboform - I can’t believe how much I freakin LOVE this program. With Roboform you can store all of your login credentials, as well as personal info to populate registrations and forms. I never realized how much time I spent typing stuff in all the time until I started using this software. It’s fantastic and you just have to try it to see how helpful it is! I don’t even ‘consider’ trying to get work done if I don’t have Roboform, as we have so many web apps these days it’s just not worth my time otherwise.

Got any programs that you’re really fond of? Drop down and share with us wot?!

i’m lazzzyyy!!

I’m so lazy i say, i don’t do anything i say. I got done probably 2 hours of work during my 8 hour shift today. How’s that for terribility?? What nonwork things did I do? Well Mediatemple appears to be an excellent reseller host, I’m thinking about compiling my scattered webshit over to their system.

Blinksale is a really cool online invoicing system. Three invoices for free per month, $12.99 after that or some such. I like it mostly, but it ain’t ‘perfect’. I’m still looking for a better solution. Do you know of any zero setup online invoicing systems?

the WWOOF is a great compendium of organic farms across the world in as many as 40+ different countries that you can go and live in exchange for work. Many of them have great raw/organic mythical farmsteads and oldworld homes. I’m currently looking for a place with children, goats, a place to swim, old growth forest, and at least one foreign language…so far today I combed through portugal, india, russia, iceland, chile, brazil, and nicaragua. goodluck to me!

I received my tax refund the other day, it’s all going in the savings account and I’m not gonna touch it. It’s my ‘potential woofing this summer’ money.

I re-organized my desktop at work, it was getting full of all kinds of shitznits.Image

Some neat points about that. The wolf is from wolfkeep of course…i forget which one this is, but Mariah perhaps? The girl Mariah tells me that the wolf Mariah doesn’t like her much. Carl says she is one of the ‘brat pack’.

Putty is the only windows terminal you ever need as far as I am concerned…and you can create shortcuts to specific putty sessions using the load operator. Simply create a session titled ‘terrazoa’ for example… and then save / create a shortcut like so…
C:\tools\putty.exe -load “terrazoa”

Doubleclick, and whammo!, you’re connected. Next week I want to figure out how to use pre-shared rsa / dsa certificates between a unix machine and windows xp so I don’t need to type in logon creds.

I just saw PuTTY Tray on chiark’s site…and it looks worth examining, i’ll do that later.

My spam folder in gmail just hit 666!

Image yay? oh hey also…I found a real cool script for greasemonkey called better gmail2, here is link, lets you read your RSS in your gmail, plus tons of other very useful and cool extras…

a few new things

I have a new design up…and I’m liking it a lot. I made the header in fireworks myself ! yay.

The honey should be here tuesday, I’m terribly excited and have been telling everybody who will listen to me.

I’ve been drinking some blue lotus tea lately…I agree, it definitely has some entheogenic properties. They aren’t obvious, and they aren’t necessarily immediate. It smells like a mummy, Mariah agrees I think. More on this later.

Wolfkeep got their first online donation from the donate button I installed for them.

Owen wants to go to iceland…

Hmmm…what am I doing today. Here’s my todo list.
